Chengetayi "Du" Mapaya, a seven-time NCAA Division 1 All-American at Texas Christian and the indoor triple jump national record holder for Zimbabwe, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing June 10 at the outdoor final at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Mapaya, the 2019 Division 1 outdoor triple jump champion, revisits producing another 17-meter jump May 27 at the West Regionals in Fayetteville, Ark., with his 56-foot (17.07m) performance in the second round, and his ambitions to pursue the 1982 collegiate record of 57-7.75 (17.57m) held by Keith Connor of SMU. He reflects on taking third at the outdoor final last year at Hayward Field and his excitement to compete at both the NCAA championship, as well as the World Championships in July at the same venue. Mapaya examines his opportunity to compete against Oregon's Emmanuel Ihemeje, who has won three consecutive Division 1 titles, including the past two indoors, in addition to achieving a 56-2.75 (17.14m) performance to win the outdoor crown last season. Mapaya, who boasts a 56-2.50 (17.13m) personal-best effort from the 2019 final in Texas, has finished runner-up once and placed third twice in his head-to-head matchups with Ihemeje, representing Italy, at the NCAA finals. He explains his motivation to elevate the performances of everyone in the competition in an effort to showcase multiple 17-meter jumps in an outdoor final for the first time since 2015. Mapaya expresses gratitude for his collaboration with TCU jumps coach Shawn Jackson and his ability to be creative and innovative with training in order to prepare for the postseason. He also analyzes his ability and focus to consistently execute one significant jump in competitions, in order to be as efficient as possible to preserve his health for both the NCAA finals and World Championships. Mapaya also talks about the genesis of his site Du Airlines and earning the nickname of the "One Jump Magician" and the pride he has for representing Zimbabwe in international competition.
